What is Smart Data

Smart data enables secure, standardised, and consent-driven data sharing between individuals and organisations, supporting interoperable, trusted data ecosystems that drive innovation, competition, and better outcomes across the economy.

Why it matters

The  UK is entering a new phase of smart data development, supported by the Data (Use and Access) Act (June 2025), which enables government and  regulators to introduce data-sharing schemes across sectors including  energy, retail, telecoms, and finance, unlocking an estimated £27.8  billion in economic value.

Alongside  regulatory schemes, there is a growing opportunity for industry-led,  commercially sustainable smart data initiatives, supported by greater  coordination, common standards, and shared governance approaches across  sectors.

Our mission  is to proactively deliver scalable, market-driven solutions that  anticipate regulation, while also supporting and operating regulatory  smart data schemes, enabling participants to lead the development of new  initiatives and ensuring effective, trusted delivery where schemes are  mandated.

Who we are

Smart Data Group is a comprehensive delivery organisation that works with smart data participants - including data holders, third-party providers (TPPs), service providers, regulators and policymakers - to design, implement and operate smart data schemes across the UK economy, including both regulatory mandated schemes and commercial schemes agreed between participants, creating collaborative data-sharing frameworks that drive innovation, competition and trust.
